The Illustrated World (1857 - 1940)

Le Monde illustrĂ© was a popular French news magazine, first published in 1857. The artists used intermediary drawings of photographs to make woodcuts, at a time when mass-printing of photographs was not possible. In later years, the woodcuts were colorized, in the manner of comic books.
